Centennial History in Honor of Utah Pioneer Gilbert Belnap, 1850-1950

The Centennial History in Honor of Utah Pioneer Gilbert Belnap, 1850-1950 was the first comprehensive compilation by the Belnap Family Organization of histories and genealogical information on the life of Gilbert Belnap, his wives Adaline Knight and Henrietta McBride, and their descendants.  It was commonly referred to as the “Red Book” among family members, on account of its red paper cover.  It was also sometimes referred to as the “Centennial Issue” or “Centennial History.”

The first installment of this three-part book was compiled by Della A. Belnap and published by the Belnap Family Organization in 1950, the centennial year of Gilbert Belnap’s arrival in Utah.  Two later additions included a “1952 Supplement” and a “1956 Supplement.”  The book was initially bound with metal tabs to permit the addition of later inserts.  The first installment contains primarily a transcript of Gilbert Belnap’s journal or life story, which he commenced while serving as a missionary to the Salmon River Mission at Fort Limhi in Oregon Territory (later Idaho).

1952 Supplement to Centennial Issue of 1950 in Honor of Gilbert Belnap, Utah Pioneer

The first supplement to the 1950 Centennial History of Gilbert Belnap, called the “1952 Supplement,” was edited by a committee appointed by the Belnap Family Organization.  The committee was comprised of Arias G. Belnap, chairman, and Marion A. Belnap Kerr, Della A. Belnap, and Gilbert E. Marriott.  The 1952 Supplement consists primarily of stories on the lives of Gilbert Belnap’s wifes Adaline Knight and Henrietta McBride.  Also included are photographs and genealogical information of immediate family members and a story on the life of Abigail Mead McBride, the shared grandmother of Adaline and Henrietta.

1956 Supplement to Centennial Issue of 1950 in Honor of Gilbert Belnap, Utah Pioneer

The second supplement to the 1950 Centennial History of Gilbert Belnap, called the “1956 Supplement,” was edited by Arias G. Belnap.  It contains biographies of each of Gilbert Belnap’s children and their spouses.  An errata page (with corrections to the 1950 Centennial History and 1952 Supplement) was also included.

Much of the information first appearing in the Centennial History, including its supplements, was subsequently reproduced in 1974 in Heritage With Honor.

The entire Centennial History, including the 1952 Supplement and 1956 Supplement, is available in PDF format by clicking here.
